The Atlantic coastal plain is very large and contains many rivers that carried sediment to the coast in the period of lowered sea level during the last Ice Age. The island did not narrow below these values because overwash was effective at transporting sediment over the barrier island, thereby keeping pace with the rate of ocean shoreline recession. He proposed that sediment moving in the breaker zone through agitation by waves in longshore drift would construct spits extending from headlands parallel to the coast. Millions of visitors are drawn to the Gulf of Mexico for Gulf Islands National Seashore's emerald coast waters, magnificent white beaches, fertile marshes and historical landscapes. The proximity of the New Jersey shoreline to the large urban population centers of New York City and Philadelphia provided the stimulus for further intensification of development. At Atlantic City, for example, the buildings are so large and so close to the beach they profoundly affect wind processes and sand transport. Heavy line outlines the boundary of the Coastal Plain. The barrier islands were low and narrow, and they were backed by salt marshes and fronted by foredunes that formed ridges in relatively stable portions of the barriers, and hummocks in more dynamic areas. The barrier island is the most consistently present landform on the Atlantic-Gulf coastline. Both the flood-tidal delta and the beach sand can be good reservoirs when they are buried in the subsurface. There is a growing body of literature on the potential acceleration of barrier erosion and migration as a result of increased rates of sea-level rise and attempts to model this on a decadal scale (Dean and Maurmeyer, 1983; Dubois, 1995; Eitner, 1996; List et al., 1997; Moore et al., 2007; FitzGerald et al., 2008; Plater et al., 2009). On many barrier islands that are only slowly eroding, landward dunes and associated landforms tend to have more diverse and richer plant communities than areas regularly overwashed (Roman and Nordstrom, 1988). Ritchie and Penland's (1990) model of dune and overwash terrains on a Louisiana barrier island as modified by Hesp and Short (1999) defines five terrain types: (1) washover sheet (large-scale bare sheets); (2) washover terrace; (3) discontinuous foredune and overwash fan; (4) continuous foredune and scattered nebkha fields; and (5) continuous foredune and foredune plain. The storm surge and hurricane overwash destroyed a low foredune and produced a large overwash terrace across half of the barrier. Many have questioned the wisdom of choosing to build on and develop barrier islands, given their risks. Because the continental shelf along the Atlantic coast is wide and not very steep, these sediments remained in the coastal zone and could be shaped by ocean waves and currents.
